How does Oppo feel about the Genesis?

Kinja'd!!!

I think it's a cool looking entry into the otherwise American dominated pony-car game. But I think dropping one of Hyundai's V8s under the hood rather than the big 3.8 V6, that would go a long way to being a legit competitor to the Mustang, Challenger, and Camaro.

That's just my thoughts, but what do you guys think?

It's a nice looking car.

Comparing it to the Camaro, I believe sparked some controversy to some car magazine.

It's a good looking car, but the clutch feels like shit.

You could get some big power out of the turbo.

Not bad looking, it's a great cheap way to get into a fun MT car.

I actually really like it. Maybe it looks a bit boy racer sometimes, but that's OK for the entry-level sports car market I think.

Add in that it makes decent power and rides pretty well, it's a pretty cool car. I think starting at $26k is a bit expensive though, for what it is.

I don't get why it would spark controversy. I remember Top Gear talking about how Hyundai was selling it to compete with the Mustang with it first came out.

Nice looking car...great value in the lightly pre-owned market but the dynamics aren't as good as they should be.

The starting price is a little high but it maxes out a bit lower than the competition. Around 36k for a fully loaded 3.8 Ultimate.

There was some memorable hate mail in one issue, "Comparing a Hyundai to American muscle."

I was fortunate enough to drive one quite often, and I think I fell in love.

The gearbox feels very industrial, which I surprisingly liked. No, its not a featherweight, but it feels like its got something buried beneath.

The V6 is powerful enough, but perhaps a little more could go a ways. It wasn't as light or nimble as a BRZ/FR-S/GT86, but it has the power over them.

. . .

I think I would choose one over anything else in the market. I don't like the toyobaru twins enough, the mustang comes with a stigma, and the Camaro is boring and badly equipped.

I like it. I feel it played a hand in Toyota/Subara deciding to make the twins. I do prefer the Genesis sedan to it though.

That's true, interesting to think about. The Camaro starts at $23.5k and tops out at like $75k wit the Z/28. The Z/28 is obviously a totally different beast than the 3.8 ultimate, but interesting to say the least. Seems you could get a V6 Camaro up to ~38k fully loaded.

Tough to say, the GC isn't terribly priced, but a little high starting price I think still.

It's also weird their site compares the GC to the 428i, audi A5, etc. They don't mention the more obvious competitors at Chevy and Ford. Maybe they want to market it as luxury, but I just don't see that happening.

I think owning one of these would be cool, only because not a lot of people even know it exists. Everyone knows about the Camaro/Challenger/Mustang, and the stigma attached to them. This one is kinda a clean slate. And a couple light upgrades to the V6 would probably go a long way.

It seems like Hyundai/Kia are trying to compare themselves to top-tier automakers instead of their real competition.

But at $26k it competes with Focus ST, VW GTI, Civic Si very well (4 cyl, turbo) but is rear wheel drive.

Go to $30 3.8R though and I think that is the one to care about. More HP than a V6 American Muscle, less than an 8 but also priced perfectly in the middle.

Yeah, I can understand what they are trying. I just don't think they will ever hit that mark. If you're still selling the accent under the Hyundai name starting at $14k, I don't see people looking past that badge to pay $61k starting for the equus or starting at $35k for the genesis sedan when you have Audi, Mercedes, BMW, and now Cadillac all fighting for that segment.

Even if the Hyundai is better, it wouldn't matter much simply because it doesn't carry the name, which most people care more about.

I think it would benefit them to create a luxury brand if they really want to fight in that game.

Exactly, pull a Toyota and make something similar to Lexus.

True, I suppose it could be cross-shopped with those cars given the consumer is debating between getting a 2-door or 4-door. But still, all three of those cars start off a bit cheaper.

The margin isn't that big, but I still feel the GC is a tad more than I would personally feel it is worth. It is funny when I think about it, unfortunately I have to say the v6 mustang and v6 camaro seem like better buys. The funny part, is that I probably would never own a V6 camaro/mustang, I'd only want the V8. Conversely, if I really wanted a GC, they don't offer a V8 and I don't think they need to. I'd be perfectly OK getting the 4 or the 6.

My thoughts exactly, it slots into a very good niche.

And, I bought my Wife a Sonata (brand new in 09), and its value (not performance, luxury etc. on its own) was outstanding. Zero mechanical issues, paint issues, or really anything.

On performance - 4 Cyl sedan, of course its slow but it is better than I expected. Actually, a manual and it would probably be fairly spirited. ~120mph was confident.

Handling: Good, twitchy maybe in the wheel, but you never wonder what the car is doing, take a hard corner on rough pavement and you feel every rock and divot, which is awesome!

It does feel under engineered, like a "sports car" should be. Which makes me wonder how great the Genesis would be. Maybe not the driving experience of an ST, or Si... But all around value when you figure the bits and pieces in like RWD, 348HP, mechanical steering,6 speed manual, Brembo brakes.

And, IMO there aren't a billion of them on the road like the Mustang is a pro. Although even you can spank the average Camaro, Mustang, or Challenger you aren't going to get respect from the muscle crowd, ever.

My only reservation about the Genesis was the interior just just 'fit' me. I did not like the ergonomics.

I rather like the aesthetics, price, and available options of this car.

Are they? If you go on their website they try and pit the Genesis Coupe to the Toyobaru twins, which I feel are in separate segments anyway, but certainly not top tier brands.

Meh. It's not all that cool looking and it didn't differentiate itself too much from the Tiburon IMHO.

My main issue with them are the drivers. It seems to be the 'next step' for people looking to replace their Scion Tc.

Agreed, especially about the respect part. I don't really know why, either. The GC is a cool car I think. It ticks off quite a bit on the list, RWD, good power, decent handling/braking, looks pretty nice and fairly aggressive.

People still don't want to fess up to a Hyundai being a good car. Though TBH I'm still unsure about the lower sedan models. A friend had quite the lemon, but that happens with every car company. So that's my bias, even though I am in the pro-GC boat.

Kinja'd!!! AthomSfere > Kailand09

What year was the lemon?

And yea, it can happen to any brand, and some years are worse than others. That said, up until the previous generation I wouldn't have gone within 1000 yards of one. I considered the Spectre 5 in 03 ish, until I say the condition of most of the 1 or 2 year old Elantras, but in the last 10 years they went from being cheap to a great value, IMO.

Truth is though, if it came down to Mustang or GC, I might go GC just for the rarity of it. I see so few GC 3.8R, and because there are non of them, the few I have seen used for sale have depreciated almost none. That is a good feeling. My Wife's Sonata depreciated pretty heavily pretty fast. 5 years in, 70k on the clock and its worth about 40% of new. Not horrible, but not great.

Yeah, my friend had a newer elantra I believe. Maybe Sonata, not sure. Maybe 2012?

Either way, I agree. Don't see so many GC's, and I definitely like that about it. As you said, mustangs and camaros are a dime a dozen.
